i guess one of the weirdest parts of tractatus to me is still the theory of math. “pseudopropositions”.
much of tractatus is what we’d now call semantics of propositional logic i think? And seems pretty standard now except we say “propositional variable” instead of “elementary proposition”
and for W this was a big deal… i mean it is a big deal. That logic doesn’t have to be “about” step-by-step arguments from axioms. Rather choosing axioms and rules is just one way to recognize validity of inferences. And the choice is free, it’s more algorithm design than recognition of which truths are fundamental enough to be axioms and which are logically secondary or whatever
But having done this for propositional logic, he takes for granted it cannot be done for arithmetic. But didn’t gödel do it? Isn’t that model theory?

every once in a while there’s a fun new kind of logic and they’re like “ok let’s fix real analysis, do it the RIGHT way this time!” and the result is a new hideous mess
people say the real numbers are fucked up but (under some definitions) the real numbers as a formal notion are just the rationals (which are fine)+the notion of a limit. and limits ARE kind of fucked up. but the fucked up ness of the real numbers is 100% just in that they are an object constructed by limits.

“Drink a potion of wine and fox blood to get better at speaking” This is a single axiom. Do A to produce B. Its just a superstition at this point. You might be following magical logic, but its not necessarily considered magic.
“They say spirits taught an old king how to make this potion” Now you have methodology. Do A to produce B, it works because mythology C. Now you can start expanding on the practice. Maybe the spirits taught the king other things?
“If you want to speak before a king, you should swap out the fox blood for the blood of a young lion.” Now you have systematization. Because of mythology C, A will produce B, and X will produce Y. Now you can make guesses on what might happen with new additions to the system. Now you’ve proper formalized magic.
looks like i missed the AO3 donation drive, but seems like a good time to throw them $20. REminded because there’s a post going around saiying you’re a bad person if you do this…. I mean whatever, people will say anything, and i only see it being reblogged to disparage it, but ao3 has provided a lot of value to me, and even at $20 it’s a lot less than i spend on the ordinary publishing industry

tahini sauce for sandwiches
- ¼ cup tahini
- whatever juice i can get out of a small lemon
- ¼ cup low-sodium vegetable broth
- 1 clove garlic, through a garlic press
mix it in a blender or food processor
not much salt because i use other salty stuff. Just had it with hot sauce
can probably use water instead of vegetable broth, i tend to replace water in recipes with vegetable broth, just to get a bit more flavor
